Why is a biologist doing everything except biology?
Not the best at multi-tasking, yet adamant on multiple tasks
Did you know I ran a meme page on Instagram (@hex_zemes) while studying for my A-levels?
Deflecting has been one of the greatest talents of mine (sarcasm). However, combined with the need to know everything and the pent-up creativity made for a nice little combo (for real).
Let’s experiment!
Research is extremely expensive, so ironically if you want to experiment with new techniques, you can’t unless you back it up with tons of research and have a bag full of grant cash. Creative work, on the other hand, just needs your brain and time. We are so lucky to have so much information on our fingertips that learning anything is extremely accessible.
A (productive) break from Pubmed and Google Scholar
To refocus, you have to focus away. Videography, photography, writing, sketching, and designing help my research camera from burning out and keep my biology lenses clean.
Instant gratification
Break-throughs in a research project are as rare as you drinking enough water (go drink some!) which is very emotionally draining, especially while being far from home. To quench my thirst for some dopamine, I look towards my creative juices to create something that I can be proud of after a few hours of editing and get back to writing my manuscript.
Round-up of my latest creative projects
Two videos for Solar Citizen (coming soon!) and the following newsletter I wrote and designed as the multimedia executive member of the AMDI student association.
Drop me any questions and topics that you would like to read about!
Until next time, your Zain of all trades

omg i wish i was this talented and productive while deflecting!!
